Matrix Bundles

Support

Matrix Bundles is a Shopify app built by Matrix Health Group Ltd. This page covers how the app behaves, including the parts that behave differently from what you might expect.

Support is by email, at support@matrixhealthgroup.co.uk. It is read by the people who build the app, and answered by them.

The app is in development. It has not been submitted to the Shopify App Store and installs on development stores only.

Start with the simulator

The app has a simulator built into it. You assemble a basket from your own products, and it shows you what checkout would do with them — including, when a basket does not qualify, the reason it does not.

Most “why is my bundle not applying” questions are answered there in less time than it takes to write to us.

If the simulator says a basket qualifies and checkout disagrees, read the entry on cart transform registration first — that accounts for it on every store at present. If that is not what you are seeing, tell us, in this order: what the simulator said, then what checkout did.

Common questions

Ordered by what causes most confusion in bundle apps generally, not by what is tidiest. Each one has its own link, so a reply from us can point straight at the answer.

A bundle is not applying. What should I check?

Work through these in order. The simulator will usually name the reason before you reach the end of the list.

Tags. Bundle membership is defined by your product tags. Compare the tag on the product with the tag in the slot character for character — a tag that reads almost the same is not the same tag.

Minimums. Every slot has a minimum quantity, and the bundle has a minimum of its own. One basket has to satisfy all of them at once.

Excluded tags. A product carrying an excluded tag will not count towards the bundle, even if it also carries the right tag for a slot.

Draft. A bundle held in draft does nothing at checkout. It has to be set live.

Selling plans. If a line in the basket carries a subscription or another purchase option, it will not be merged. That one is a platform rule — see subscriptions.

If the simulator says the basket qualifies and checkout does not, read cart transform registration before writing to us — that accounts for it on every store at present.

Can a customer use a discount code on top of a bundle price?

Yes, and by default they can. The bundle price is a price adjustment rather than a discount, which is why it uses none of your store’s twenty-five discount function slots — but it also means a store-wide code is not aware of it and can apply over the top.

The two do not simply add. A bundle at 15% off with a 20% code over it lands the customer well below 20% off the original price. Model it against a real basket before you put a promotion live, because the figure the customer sees is not the figure you set.

My store says no cart transform is registered. Is the app broken?

No, but it is incomplete, and until it is resolved no bundle will merge at checkout on that store. The app does not yet register its own cart transform, and it does not yet create the parent variant a merged line is presented as. Both are being addressed.

This is why the simulator can tell you a basket qualifies while checkout prices it as ordinary separate items. The rules are right; the mechanism that applies them at checkout is not connected yet.

The cart showed one line and the order shows four. Is that a bug?

No — it is the design, and it is the reason to use this app rather than one that builds bundle products.

The shopper sees one line carrying the title you wrote. The order records the individual products, grouped together as one bundle. That is what keeps stock counts, picking and per-product reporting working normally: you are still selling the products you actually stock, not a separate bundle item that has to be reconciled by hand.

How do I report on how many bundles I have sold?

Not from inside the app. It measures nothing, shows no figures and makes no claims about performance — there is no analytics screen and we would rather say so than show you numbers we cannot stand behind.

On the order, the components of a bundle are grouped, so bundled lines are distinguishable from ordinary ones in Shopify’s own order data.

Will it create bundle products in my catalogue?

One, and it is hidden. When you set a bundle live the app adds a single helper product to carry the merged line’s title and price; Shopify marks it accessible only by direct link, so it does not appear in your storefront, collections or search. Beyond that it creates nothing — no bundle products for you to sell, no shadow variants, nothing generated per order. It reads your products so you can build a rule against their tags.

Bundle rules live as metaobjects on your own store, so they belong to you and they leave with the app.

One product, quantity four, satisfied a three-item bundle. Why?

Because the rules are minimums, and nothing in them requires the items to be different. If a single product carries every tag a bundle’s slots ask for, enough of that one product will satisfy the rule on its own.

If you meant a bundle to span different products, the way to get there today is through your tags: give each slot a tag that only one group of products carries.

Can I set a fixed bundle price, three for £30?

No. Pricing is a percentage off the qualifying lines, and that is the whole of it. No fixed bundle price, no volume tiers, no buy-one-get-one, no free gift, no free shipping.

If a fixed price is what your promotion needs, this is not the app for it, and we would rather you knew that before you installed anything.

Can I cap a bundle at five items?

No. Slots carry a minimum and no maximum, and so does the bundle overall. There is no way to express “at most five”.

If a cap matters to your margin, tell us what you are trying to prevent and we will tell you whether your tags can express it.

Can a subscription product be part of a bundle?

No, and no app can make it so.

Shopify’s cart transform refuses to merge a line that carries a selling plan, so a subscription or other purchase option in the basket will not join a bundle. It is a platform rule rather than a decision of ours, and there is no way around it.

Can customers build their own bundle from a range — any three from this collection?

The rule can be that loose, but it is expressed with tags rather than collections. Give the range a tag, create a slot on that tag with a minimum of three, and any three qualifying products in the basket will form the bundle. Collections, product types and vendors cannot be used as the rule.

How a shopper chooses those three on your storefront is your theme’s job. This app enforces the rule and the price; it ships no storefront picker.

Can you add a bundle to an order that has already been placed?

No. The pricing runs at checkout, and an existing order cannot be edited into a bundle. If a customer missed a bundle they should have had, it has to be handled as a refund and a new order, the way you would handle any other pricing mistake.

What can the app see on my store?

Write access to products, cart transforms, metaobjects, metaobject definitions and sales channel publications, and read access to your existing discounts. Write access to products is what lets it read your catalogue to build a rule against it, and lets it create the one hidden helper product a live bundle needs to carry the merged line’s title and price.

It has no permission to read customers and none to read orders, so it could not reach that data if it tried. It operates at Shopify’s protected customer data Level 0.

Does it work with point of sale?

We have not tested it there, so we will not tell you that it does. If in-store selling matters to you, tell us and we will say what we know rather than guess.

How do I refund part of a bundle?

The order carries the individual products as ordinary lines, so a partial refund is made against those lines in your admin like any other order.

We have not published a worked example of how a single component refunds out of a discounted bundle, and we would rather say so than describe a mechanism we have not shown you. If the exact figures matter to your process, ask before you rely on it.

Sending a request we can answer

The app holds no customer or order data, and asks Shopify for no permission to read either, so we cannot open your store and look for ourselves. What you tell us is what we have to work with.

A request with these in it can usually be settled in one reply rather than three:

  • your shop domain, the myshopify.com one
  • the name of the bundle, exactly as you typed it
  • what you expected to happen, and what happened instead
  • the basket you tried it with: the products, the quantities, and the tags on those products
  • what the simulator said about that same basket
  • where you saw it: the cart, the checkout, or the order afterwards

If it is about money, include the numbers — what the line came to, and what you thought it should come to. If something looks broken across every bundle rather than one, say so in the first line.

Uninstalling, and what happens to your settings

Bundle rules are stored as metaobjects on your own Shopify store. They are records on your store, not rows in a database of ours.

That is also why the app comes out cleanly. There are no bundle products to unpick and no generated variants — the only thing it leaves behind is the hidden helper product for each live bundle, which Shopify does not delete automatically. Remove those after uninstalling and nothing of the app is left in your catalogue.

Uninstalling stops the bundle pricing. Your bundle settings stay where they have always been, on your store. What we hold for your shop is the shop domain and the access token Shopify issued, and that is deleted when you uninstall. The privacy policy sets out the whole of what is held, and when it goes.
