Matrix Bundles

Support

Matrix Bundles is a Shopify app for mix-and-match bundles, built by Matrix Health Group Ltd. This page covers how the app behaves, including the parts that behave differently from what you might expect.

Support is by email, at support@matrixhealthgroup.co.uk. It is read by the people who build the app, and answered by them.

Matrix Bundles is live on the Shopify App Store. If you have installed it and something isn't right, email us.

How to set it up is in the manual. Install it from the Shopify App Store.

Start with “What checkout will do”

Open the bundle in Your bundles. The panel headed What checkout will do builds a cart from your own products, runs it against the rules you last saved, and shows what checkout would do with it — including why it would not qualify. It uses saved rules only, so press Save first.

Most “why is my bundle not applying” questions are answered there in less time than it takes to write to us.

If What checkout will do says a cart qualifies and checkout disagrees, read the entry on a bundle that is not applying first — its last step is the usual cause. If that is not what you are seeing, tell us, in this order: what that panel said, then what checkout did.

Common questions

Ordered by what causes most confusion in bundle apps generally, not by what is tidiest. Each one has its own link, so a reply from us can point straight at the answer.

A bundle is not applying. What should I check?

Work through these in order. The What checkout will do panel on the bundle’s screen will usually name the reason before you reach the end of the list.

What the step points at. A step points at a collection you keep, or at a product tag. For a collection, check the product is actually in it. For a tag, compare the tag on the product with the tag in the step character for character — a tag that reads almost the same is not the same tag.

Minimums. A step has a minimum quantity unless it has been marked optional, and the bundle has a minimum of its own. One basket has to satisfy all of them at once.

Exclusions. A bundle can leave out a collection or a tag. A product caught by one of those will not count towards the bundle, even if it also satisfies a step.

Draft. A bundle held in draft does nothing at checkout. It has to be set live.

Selling plans. If a line in the basket carries a subscription or another purchase option, it will not be merged. That one is a platform rule — see subscriptions.

If the app says the basket qualifies and checkout does not, the usual cause is the hidden helper product having been deleted or unpublished. Open the bundle in the app: it checks on every load and says so at the top of the screen.

Can a customer use a discount code on top of a bundle price?

Yes, and by default they can. The bundle price is a price adjustment rather than a discount, which is why it uses none of your store’s 25 automatic discounts — but it also means a store-wide code is not aware of it and can apply over the top.

The two do not simply add. A bundle at 15% off with a 20% code over it lands the customer well below 20% off the original price. Model it against a real basket before you put a promotion live, because the figure the customer sees is not the figure you set.

Codes limited to collections or products. In the cart a bundle is one line, and it belongs to the bundle’s hidden helper product. So a limited code comes off a bundle only if that hidden product is in one of the code’s collections, or is one of its products. The products inside the bundle being in the collection is not enough. The hidden product is priced at 0.01, so an automated collection whose rule is any price above 0 takes it in by itself.

Does a bundle use one of my 25 automatic discounts?

No. A bundle’s saving is a price adjustment Shopify makes when it merges the products into one line, not a discount. Bundle prices use none of the 25 automatic discounts Shopify lets a shop run at once.

Discount rules, on the Core + Discounts plan, are different. Discounts made by apps count towards the 25, and all your rules share one automatic discount, so they use one of the 25 however many you make. The app makes it when you set your first rule live, not before.

My store says no cart transform is registered. Is the app broken?

No. The app registers its own cart transform when you open it, and creates the one hidden helper product a live bundle needs, so this resolves itself in most cases — close the app and open it again. If it persists, the usual cause is that the store has reached Shopify’s limit for cart transform functions; removing an unused app that uses one frees a slot. The app tells you which of these it is.

While that is the case, What checkout will do can tell you a cart qualifies and checkout can still price it as ordinary separate items: the rules are right, but the mechanism that applies them has nowhere to run. Reopening the app is the fix in most cases, and the app says on screen which of the two it is.

The cart showed one line and the order shows four. Is that a bug?

No — it is the design, and it is the reason to use this app rather than one that builds bundle products.

The shopper sees one line carrying the title you wrote. The order records the individual products, grouped together as one bundle. That is what keeps stock counts, picking and per-product reporting working normally: you are still selling the products you actually stock, not a separate bundle item that has to be reconciled by hand.

How do I report on how many bundles I have sold?

Not from inside the app. It measures nothing, shows no figures and makes no claims about performance — there is no analytics screen and we would rather say so than show you numbers we cannot stand behind.

On the order, the components of a bundle are grouped, so bundled lines are distinguishable from ordinary ones in Shopify’s own order data.

Will it create bundle products in my catalogue?

One, and it is hidden. When you set a bundle live the app adds a single helper product to carry the merged line’s title and price. The app sets it to Unlisted, Shopify’s status for a product only its direct link reaches, so it stays out of your shop’s search and collection pages. It can still belong to a collection, which matters for discount codes. Beyond that it creates nothing — no bundle products for you to sell, no shadow variants, nothing generated per order. It reads your products and collections so you can build a rule against them.

Bundle rules live as metaobjects on your own store, so they belong to you and they leave with the app.

One product, quantity four, satisfied a three-item bundle. Why?

Because the rules are minimums, and nothing in them requires the items to be different. If a single product carries every tag a bundle’s steps ask for, enough of that one product will satisfy the rule on its own.

If you meant a bundle to span different products, give each step its own collection — or its own tag — so that no single product can satisfy more than one of them.

Can I set a fixed bundle price, three for £30?

Not a fixed price, no. Pricing is a percentage off the qualifying lines. Depending on which builder your shop is on, that percentage can also grow as the bundle grows — more items, a bigger saving. What is not there: a set bundle price, an amount off in pounds, buy-one-get-one, or free shipping. A bundle can come with a free gift, though.

If a fixed price is what your promotion needs, this is not the app for it, and we would rather you knew that before you installed anything.

Can a bundle come with a free gift?

Yes. On the bundle’s screen in the app, the card headed Free gift takes up to three products, and 1 to 10 of each. Every complete bundle comes with them, and the shopper does not choose them. They pay exactly what the bundle costs without the gift.

The gift is free only inside a complete bundle. Extra ones in the cart cost the normal price, and a gift is never given for spending over an amount. If it sells out, the bundle still sells, without it. Free gifts need the new builder.

On the order the gift is listed with the other items in the bundle. It carries a share of what the customer paid rather than £0, so returning the gift alone refunds that share. The manual has the rest, under Free gifts.

Can I cap a bundle at five items?

No. A step carries no maximum, and neither does the bundle overall. There is no way to express “at most five”.

If a cap matters to your margin, tell us what you are trying to prevent and we will tell you whether your collections or tags can express it.

Can a subscription product be part of a bundle?

No, and no app can make it so.

Shopify’s cart transform refuses to merge a line that carries a selling plan, so a subscription or other purchase option in the basket will not join a bundle. It is a platform rule rather than a decision of ours, and there is no way around it.

Can customers mix and match their own bundle — any three from this collection?

Yes, and a collection is the way to say it. Create a step that points at the collection, set its minimum to three, and any three products from that collection will form the bundle. Anything you add to the collection later joins the bundle on its own. Product types and vendors cannot be used as the rule.

The app ships the builder for it. You add it to your theme in Shopify’s own theme editor, as a block — the app never edits your theme, and the Save is yours to press. It draws steps that point at a collection. A step on a tag still gives its discount at checkout, but no builder can draw a bundle that has one, so the page shows an empty space where the builder should be — use a collection for anything customers build themselves.

How much does it cost?

Free for one live bundle. $19 a month for Core, or $29 a month for Core + Discounts, each with a 14-day free trial. Shopify bills the paid plans, in US dollars, and your price does not rise with your sales.

On the Free plan, one bundle can be live at a time, and you can keep other bundles as drafts. It has no discount rules. A bundle works the same way as on Core: built from your collections, and one line at checkout.

If you move down to Free, bundles that are already live stay live. You cannot set a new one live while another is live.

Does it work with my theme?

The builder is a block you add in Shopify’s theme editor, so your theme has to accept app blocks. Online Store 2.0 themes do — the kind where you build pages from sections in the theme editor. It has been walked through to checkout on Horizon, one of Shopify’s own free themes. We have not tested every theme, so look at it in your theme editor’s preview before you publish.

On an older theme that cannot take app blocks, the builder cannot be placed. The one discounted line at checkout does not depend on your theme: a cart built without the builder still arrives as one merged line.

Can you add a bundle to an order that has already been placed?

No. The pricing runs at checkout, and an existing order cannot be edited into a bundle. If a customer missed a bundle they should have had, it has to be handled as a refund and a new order, the way you would handle any other pricing mistake.

What can the app see on my store?

Write access to products, cart transforms, metaobjects, metaobject definitions and sales channel publications, and read access to your existing discounts. Write access to products is what lets it read your catalogue to build a rule against it, and lets it create the one hidden helper product a live bundle needs to carry the merged line’s title and price.

If you turn on discount rules, it asks you once for one more permission, to make discounts, and uses it for the one automatic discount your rules share.

It has no permission to read customers and none to read orders, so it could not reach that data if it tried. It operates at Shopify’s protected customer data Level 0.

Does it work with point of sale?

We have not tested it there, so we will not tell you that it does. If in-store selling matters to you, tell us and we will say what we know rather than guess.

How do I refund part of a bundle?

The order carries the individual products as ordinary lines, so a partial refund is made against those lines in your admin like any other order.

We have not published a worked example of how a single component refunds out of a discounted bundle, and we would rather say so than describe a mechanism we have not shown you. If the exact figures matter to your process, ask before you rely on it.

Sending a request we can answer

The app holds no customer or order data, and asks Shopify for no permission to read either, so we cannot open your store and look for ourselves. What you tell us is what we have to work with.

A request with these in it can usually be settled in one reply rather than three:

  • your shop domain, the myshopify.com one
  • the name of the bundle, exactly as you typed it
  • what you expected to happen, and what happened instead
  • the basket you tried it with: the products, the quantities, and the collections or tags those products are in
  • what the What checkout will do panel said about that bundle
  • where you saw it: the cart, the checkout, or the order afterwards

If it is about money, include the numbers — what the line came to, and what you thought it should come to. If something looks broken across every bundle rather than one, say so in the first line.

Uninstalling, and what happens to your settings

Bundle rules are stored as metaobjects on your own Shopify store. They are records on your store, not rows in a database of ours.

That is also why the app comes out cleanly. There are no bundle products to unpick and no generated variants — the only thing it leaves behind is the hidden helper product for each live bundle, which Shopify does not delete automatically. Remove those after uninstalling and nothing of the app is left in your catalogue.

Uninstalling stops the bundle pricing. Your bundle settings stay where they have always been, on your store. What we hold for your shop is the shop domain and the access token Shopify issued, and that is deleted when you uninstall. The privacy policy sets out the whole of what is held, and when it goes.
